I just learned that the father of modern heli skiing, Hans Gmoser, died in a bicycling fall yesterday. Not only was Hans an amazing visionary when it came to mechanized skiing, but he also was involved in much Canadian ski alpinism.

Here’s a brief history of Hans’s life: http://www.peakfinder.com/people.asp?PersonsName=Gmoser%2C+Hans Sounds like he had a pretty remarkable life, with much of it in the mountains. Third ascent of Mount Alberta–not too shabby.

Sorry for the redundancy in previous link. Lou’s link to a story of Hans’ life is much more thorough.

Hey i just wanted to say that I had the pleasure of spending a wonderful weekend with Hans Gmoser when he was out a shadow lake lodge the winter before his passing. It sure makes you think about how great life can be if you just enjoy it. He had a smile on his face everytime i saw him. What a great person!
