What is the Dynafit binding?
The Dynafit is a backcountry skiing binding that allows
you to ski downhill with your boot attached to your ski the same
way a regular alpine ski binding functions,
yet transforms into a touring/climbing binding for skiing uphill
or across level ground with your heels free to move up and
down.
The binding is available in three models. The TLT (Tour Lite
Tech) has been available for more than
a decade. We have used the TLT for more than twelve years
and highly recommend it and the Dynafit Comfort. (We also recommend
the Naxo and Fritschi offerings, though we feel the Dynafit
is best for human powered ski mountaineering that involves lots
of vertical.) As of winter
2003/04
the
Comfort model
is also available. This combines an improved heel with a slightly
improved
toe, and may be an even better binding, though it's not yet
had extensive testing. Lastly, a discontinued version known as
the Tri-Step is available on the used market and is similar to
the TLT and Comfort (it uses a Comfort heel and slightly modified
TLT toe). While the Tri-Step works for some skiers, we do not
recommend it.
