Turns Back From School
As usual, it started snowing a few days before I left Washington state for winter break, and by the time I got home, a good three feet had fallen in the Elks. That made for good powder skiing, albiet with pretty high avalanche danger. I had my knees operated on in the fall, and I visited the doctor to see if I could ski. He said yes, as long as I stuck to low impact stuff (read: powder). With all that in mind, I headed up to a friend’s cabin in the Elk Mountains of Colorado. We had some good low angled powder skiing in the trees, and even ventured out on some steeper more open slopes that we judged to be safe.

The knees are working

Jason slashing through some powder

Sketchy CO snowpack: 2 feet of powder, 8 inches of sugar, then dirt.

I'm pretty sure our sled is worth 3 times as much as the truck.

Glad to hear the knees are up and running.
What happened to your knees, Louie? What did you have done?
I had some genetic problems that made my kneecaps prone to subluxing and dislocating. So I had a lateral release and a medial plication on both of them. They also tried to clean up the cartilage a bit.
That column would make Chuck Norris cry.
Sorry to hear about your knee issues, especiallty being so young in your case. Dang genetics. Is that Lou’s fault (grin)? Love the picture of the old Ford and the $12K snowmobile.
Hey Louie. Sorry about the knees; doesn’t sound like much fun. Are those the 181 Coombacks? If so, any thoughts on how the longer length handled in the trees, esp at slower speeds (I know, I know, “what are those?” Sigh…)? Comparisons to the 174?
Any truck that can get you and a shred sled to the trailhead is worth its weight in gold. My rusted out ’94 Toyota Pickup is testament to that. Now if only the sled in the back was as nice…
Matt- Those are the 174 Coombacks, haven’t got the 181s yet, apparently they ran out. Still love the 174s though.
Hey Louie,
I’m kind of an orthopaedic dork so I, too, was interested in what you had done. I’ve helped perform dozens of those although the procedure seems to be performed less and less these days. Honestly, I cannot ever remember doing one on a male. Interesting. Well, I hope it breathes some additional life into your patellar cartilage. I assume you’ve been drilled on the importance of rehabbing your quads ’til the cows come home. Lots of cycling and don’t fear the weight room. Good luck.
