PM Update: If you’re seeing this update you’re looking at WildSnow on our new server/host. Hopefully you’ll notice a bit more speed if you have the fast connection to take advantage of it. (According to a few tests, we’re now about 20% faster than the former host.) More, uptime should be about 100% as well. Thus we’re hoping you all won’t get as many glitches while making comments, some of which were caused by momentary server outages. If we get all that or even a marked improvement over former hosting (AKA hosing), we’re ready for next season!

Please leave a comment and let us know how our new hosting works for you.

Original Post:

Starting today we’ll be moving WildSnow.com to a new hosting company. This’ll be our third webhost. Turns out very few hosts deliver what they imply in their promises, and we had problems last winter with BlueHost’s random unannounced downtime and “server maintenance” that seemed to frequently happen during our busiest days and hours.

This might have been a function of our success, as we do get some pretty big traffic spikes.

Too bad a webhost such as BlueHost can’t work with success, rather than conflict with it. Seems to be an odd business model, but then, cyberspace and computing can get somewhat crazy at times (as it is said, if they made a car that ran like Microsoft Windows you’d see the biggest class action lawsuit in the history of the planet.)

Oh well, now we’ll try MediaTemple.com. If they deliver seven tenths of what they promise things should work out fine. If not, well, we will move again.

So, we’ll start working on the server/host change today and WildSnow may be down or non-functional at some time during the weekend. We’ll be back to normal ASAP, latest on Monday morning.

Thanks to you all for your patience and support. Please leave comments and let us know how the new server works for you.

Well… I just upgraded my connection speed too, but it seems that the site loads faster than it used to. Not sure if that’s at your end or mine. Hope it all works well for you though.

The server is definitely 20% faster than the one before, so if you upgraded your connection as well you should notice quite a difference for things like trip reports with lots of photos, or videos.

Everything seem to work fine. However, I have never had any problem with wildsnow.com – maybe because of visiting during low traffic times.

Well I like to post and check up from work, on an oil rig in the north sea. Our connection out here is some crappy sattelite link up which always appears to be around dial up speeds. Anyways I noticed a marked improvement on the front page loadup this morning Lou, appears like a good investment.

Got something to say? Please do so.
